ELMIRA — Spencer-Van Etten / Candor standout Tayah Beach will get a shot at redemption in the semifinals of the Southern Tier Memorial girls wrestling tournament being held at LECOM Events Center here.
Beach went 4-0 on day one Friday, advancing to the semifinals where she will face Fulton’s Gionna Allen. Allen, one of just two opponents to get the better of Beach this season, won their previous meeting at the Frosty Freestyle Festival two weeks ago.
At the Memorial, Beach pinned her first opponent in 4:36, then decked the second foe in 2:22. She followed that up with a 37 second fall in the Round of 16, then dispatched her fourth victim of the day in 1:06 in the quarterfinals.
Beach is the No. 3 seed while Allen, the second seed, reached the semis with a pin, forfeit and two tech falls.
Taylor Zufall (114) remains alive in the consolation bracket after winning three of four bouts. She upset Owego’s Ashlee Crawford-Bauer, the ninth seed, in the first round with a 12-2 tech fall in 2:10. In the wrestlebacks, she posted a 10-0 tech fall in 2:55 and a wild 17-12 decision.
Liz Kunte (107) and Katelynn VanEtten (235) both went 1-2.
Kunte’s win was by fall in 2:10 while VanEtten got her victory with a 35-second fall.
Second day action starts at 9 a.m. Saturday.
