ELMIRA — Hadley Merrill highlighted the efforts of the fledgling Newark Valley girls wrestling team on day one of the Southern Tier Memorial wrestling tournament held at LECOM Events Center here Friday.
Unseeded, Merrill went 3-0 to advance to the semifinals at 94 pounds. She pinned her first opponent, the No. 3 seed, in 52 seconds, then scored a 10-0 tech fall in 2:42. In the quarterfinals, she claimed a 4–4 criteria decision to move into the semifinals against the No. 2 seed, Lorilye Beardsley of Avon-Geneseo.
Also alive at 94 pounds is Tressa Middendorf, who went 2-1 with two falls. She had a pin in 21 seconds while leading, 4-0, and in 4:01 while ahead, 8-0.
Joining Middendorf in the consolation bracket is Billeigh Dawson (126), who also went 2-1. She recorded falls in 3:34 while trailing, 8-6, and in 1:33 while holding a 6-2 advantage.
Isabella King (152) is also wrestling back, having gone 2-1. She registered two of the quickest falls of the day — nine and 14 seconds — to reach the quarterfinals.
Maddilynn Davis went 2-2 at 126 with a forfeit win and a 37-second fall to her credit.
Malerie Gregrow (132) was also 2-2. She posted a pair of tech fall victories, 12-1 in 2:29 and 10-0 in 1:39.
Nora McCann went 1-2 at 107. She pinned her first opponent in 4:01 while leading the bout, 12-7.
Second day action starts at 9 a.m. Saturday.
