Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO — The Candor and Newark Valley bowling teams started the new year off by splitting an IAC match at Owego bowl here Tuesday with the Coyotes winning the girls battle, 3-1, and NV taking the boys match, 4-0.
BOYS
NV 4, Candor 0
The Cardinals downed the short-handed Candor squad, 2181-1440, in total pinfall, winning the individual games by scores of 649-433, 783-520 and 749-487.
The Coyotes’ Malcolm Jackson rolled the high series of the day, a 558, which was highlighted by a high game of 217.
Devon Green paced NV with a 182-517. John Sloughter scored a 160-432, Mason Peck had a 181-429, William Simmons shot 157-417, Reese Illsley had a150-378 and Kaleb Jackson added a 116-335.
Stanley Winnick recorded a 156-456 and Connor Kellogg had a 152-426 for Candor.
“The boys were able to take all four points due to Candor only having three boys to compete,” NV coach Cody Cornell said. “Despite not bowling at our usual pin total, I'm happy with the boys’ performance after not having a match the last two and a half weeks. We will take the four points and it will help us in placement in our division.”
GIRLS
Candor 3, NV 1
The Coyotes won the first two games, 748-666 and 745-680, but NV would avoid the sweep by taking game three, 790-703. Total pinfall went to Candor, 2196-2136.
Calli Marsh led the Candor effort with a 198-521, Allison Johnston contributed a 176-472, Zoe Travis chipped in with a 155-441, Kyrsten Jackson added a 144-377, Makenna Nixon had a 135-370 and Reina Schneider-Kern tacked on a 131-324.
The Cardinals’ effort was led by Rachel Hartman’s 234-512, Abigal Dufresne followed with a 179-478, MaeAnna Jackson shot 131-364, Abigail DeBolt added a 128-352, and Stormi Wiley tacked on a 124-323.
“The girls had a hard time getting going the first two games, bowling well below their total pinfall,” Cornell said. “Abigal Dufresne kept the team encouraged with a solid first two games. Newcomer this week, Stormi Wiley, also had solid games that contributed to the pin total. By the third game the girls had finally found their rhythm.
“Even though this is our first points lost this season, I hope it will encourage the girls to keep working hard and give them some drive as we face Tioga this Thursday. This team is a great group of girls and will bounce back from this small setback. I know they will respond to this adversity with nothing but positivity and determination.”
Both teams are back in action Thursday with Candor hosting Watkins Glen at Owego Bowl and Newark Valley visiting Tioga at Valley Bowling Center.
