IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY PULLS AWAY IN 57-37 WIN OVER TRUMANSBURG (January 6, 2026)

NEWARK VALLEY — Newark Valley jumped out to a nine-point lead after the first quarter, then pulled away in a 57-37 win over Trumansburg here Tuesday night in IAC Large School girls basketball crossover action.
"The team played well tonight," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.
"Gabbi James stepped in to the starting lineup tonight to fill in due to illness and turned in her best game of the season," he said.
"Kam (Short) did a nice job in The paint and from the foul line and Richie (Adriana Rich) showed her senior leadership by having a solid all-around game," added Schweiger.
Kam Short scored seven points in the first quarter and Adriana Rich added four points to lead the Cardinals to a 17-8 lead after the first eight minutes.
Haven Aylesworth and Short, who was four-for-four from the free-throw line, scored four points apiece in a 12-7 spurt that gave Newark Valley a 29-15 lead at the halftime intermission.
Short Scored six points in the third quarter, while Gabbi James added five points, including a 3-pointer, and Rich canned a 3-pointer in a 17-11 run that pushed the Cardinal advantage to 46-26 heading into the final eight minutes.
Short led the Cardinals with 19 points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots, and Rich had 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and one blocked shot.
James had 11 points, two assists and three steals in the win, while Aylesworth added seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals, Elizabeth Phillips had four points, five rebounds and three assists, and Malloy Chapman scored four points.
Newark Valley returns to action Friday when it hosts Lansing.
