TIOGA COUNTY SPORTS REPORT: NEWARK VALLEY'S SHORT, OWEGO'S CRAFT, LOVELL NAMED GUTHRIE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK' (January 5, 2025)

TIOGA COUNTY — Newark Valley junior Kam Short led the Cardinals to three wins, while Owego senior RaeAnne Craft and 7th-grader Gavin Lovell each recorded tournament wins. They are the TCSR / Guthrie Community Credit Union for the holiday weeks (Dec. 22 through Jan. 3.)

NEWARK VALLEY'S SHORT, OWEGO'S CRAFT NAMED GUTHRIE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION GIRLS 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK'
Short averaged 15.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 2.3 steals per game in three wins, and recorded her first career triple-double.

Short had 10 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots in a 51-23 win over D-H, and 23 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and three blocked shots in a 57-22 win over Dryden at the Holiday Hustle Tournament at Marathon.

Short led the Cardinals 13 points, 11 rebounds and 11 blocked shots in a 40-33 win over Whitney Point.

Craft was 3-0 — all first-period falls — to win the 145-pound title at the Dorothy Palma Classic at Alfred State University.

Craft decked Ithaca's Kailynn Holmes in 38 seconds in the quarterfinals, then flattened Webster's Mallory Denton in 17 seconds in the semis.

In the finals, Craft pinned Aliyah Teets of Horseheads in 1:19.

OWEGO'S LOVELL NAMED GUTHRIE COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION BOYS 'ATHLETES OF THE WEEK'
Lovell, ranked 13th in the state by New York USA Wrestling and 19th by New York Wrestling News, won the 103-pound title at the Stan Elisky Tournament.

Lovell opened the tourney with a 17-0 tech fall, then recorded pins in 44, 44 and 41 seconds. 

Lovell defeated teammate Cael Daly, 6-0, to take the gold.
