Tioga County Sports Report
WHITNEY POINT — Newark Valley raced out to a 12-point first-quarter lead, then held off Whitney Point in a 40-33 win here Friday afternoon in IAC Large School girls basketball crossover action.

"We had a great shooting first half," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger. "The second half we went cold, and did just enough to hold them off.

"It's great to get three wins in one week," noted Schweiger, whose Cardinals won the Oneonta Christmas Tournament. "But I’m looking forward to getting back to regular schedule.

Kam Short paced the Cardinals in the win with a triple-double, recording 13 points, 11 rebounds and 11 blocked shots.

"Kam had a monster game, and her first triple-double," said Schweiger.

Short scored six points in the first quarter, and Haven Aylesworth and Adrianna Rich each knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to fuel an 18-6 first-quarter blitz for the Cardinals.

Rich canned two more 3-pointers in the second quarter, and Aubrey Kwiatkowski added one trey, but Whitney Point used an 12-11 advantage in the stanza to close the gap to 29-18.

Short and Aylesworth combined to score 9 of Newark Valley's 11 points in the second half, but the Cardinal defense held the Golden Eagles to just 15 points to preserve the win.

Rich had 12 points on four 3-pointers, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocked shots for the Cardinals, and Aylesworth added 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists.
