Tioga County Sports ReportMARATHON — Newark Valley's defense set the tone, and the Cardinal offense provided enough punch for a 57-22 rout of Dryden here Tuesday evening in the championship game of the Marathon Holiday Hustle Girls Basketball Tournament.
Newark Valley's Aubrey Kwiatkowski was named the tourney MVP, and Kam Short was named to the all-start team.
"The team played well tonight," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger. "We did a nice job in the first half on defense, and we had nice balanced scoring.
"Kam (Short) really took over in the second half and put together her best game of the season," he added.
Kwiatkowski scored seven points, including a 3-pointers, in the first quarter, while Short scored four points, and Adrianna Rich added a shot from behind the arc to propel the Cardinals to a 14-3 lead after the first eight minutes.
Kwiatkowski, Rich and Haven Aylesworth each canned a trey in the second quarter to fuel a 17-4 blitz that extended the Newark Valley lead to to 31-7 at the half.
Short scored 17 points in the second half as the Cardinals added to their lead in the third and fourth quarters.
Short led Newark Valley with 23 points, eight rebounds, five steals, and three blocked shots, and Kwiatkowski had 14 points, six assists and five steals.
Rich had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers, and seven boards in the win, while Aylesworth added five points and five assists, Gabbi James chipped in with four points and two steals, and Elizabeth Phillips seven rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots and two assists.
Guilianna Pascarella scored 18 of Dryden's 22 points.
Newark Valley returns to action Friday at Whitney Point. The JV start time is 11 a.m.
