IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY ROLLS OVER DEPOSIT-HANCOCK IN OPENING ROUND OF 'HOLIDAY HUSTLE TOURNAMENT' (December 29, 2025)

MARATHON — Newark Valley jumped out to a 10-point lead early, and cruised to a 51-23 win over Deposit-Hancock here Monday afternoon in the opening round of the Marathon Holiday Hustle Girls Basketball Tournament.

"You never know what you are going to get from your team over Christmas break, so I’m pleased to get the win," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger.

"We did a nice job on defense and on the boards.

"Aubrey (Kwiatkowski) got off to a hot start and that helped us settle down offensively," noted Schweiger. "It was good to see our scoring spread around as well. 

"Hopefully, we got the rust knocked off and we will be ready for the championship game," added Schweiger.

Kwiatkowski drained a trio of 3-pointers in the first quarter to fuel a 16-6 blitz in the opening eight minutes.

Kam Short scored seven points, including a 3-pointer, for the Cardinals in the second quarter as they used a 10-6 spurt to extend the lead to 26-12 at the half.

Adrianna Rich knocked down two 3-pointers in the third quarter, and Short added four points in a 14-6 run that pushed the lead to 40-18 heading into the final eight minutes.

Five different Cardinals scored in the fourth quarter, including Kwiatkowski, who canned her fourth 3-pointer of the game, in an 11-5 game-closing spurt.

Kwiatkowski led Newark Valley with 15 points and four rebounds, and Short had 10 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.

Haven Aylesworth stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, nine rebounds, seven assists, three steals and one blocked shot, while Rich had eight points, 10 boards and four steals, Elizabeth Phillips added five points, nine rebounds and four steals, and Gabbi James chipped in with five steals.

Newark Valley will face Dryden, which beat Marathon 37-30 in the other opening-round game, Tuesday at 5 p.m.
