SPENCER — Katelynn VanEtten won the only contested bout as Spencer-Van Etten/ Candor shut out Schuyler, 36-0, in IAC girls wrestling action here Wednesday.

VanEtten survived an early scare to pin Lacie Flynn late in the first period of their 235-pound tilt. Flynn took her down to her back, but VanEtten fought off the pin attempt.

When they restarted on their feet, VanEtten, got the takedown, cutting the lead to 4-2. The next restart saw VanEtten take Flynn to her back and keep her there for the fall.

Receiving forfeits for the Eagles were Elizabeth Kunte, Taylor Zufall, Tayah Beach, Madalyn Jayne and Abigail Russell.

Schuyler has three wrestlers, but only brought one to the match. SVEC has six with Beach, now in her fifth season (including time on the boys squad), leading the way. VanEtten and Zufall are in their third seasons, Russell is in her second, and Kunte and Jayne are newcomers.

Currently, the girls team does not compete again until the Southern Tier Memorial Girls Tournament at LECOM Events Center on Jan. 9, however, coach Robbie Swartout said they are looking for more tournaments.
