IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: CANDOR PULLS AWAY FROM NEWFIELD, EVENS RECORD AT 2-2 (December 17, 2025)
Tioga County Sports Report
NEWFIELD — Candor pulled away from Newfield in the second half of a physical, chaotic game here Tuesday to record a 45-29 victory in IAC South Small School girls basketball action.
The Coyotes raced out to a 13-4 advantage in the first quarter on the strength of 11 points from Emmi Makie.
Candor extended its lead to 13 at the start of the second frame with a 3-pointer from Malley Heidl and a free throw from Shawna Conklin. Megan Williamson answered a Trojan layup with a field goal of her own, but Newfield went on a 10-0 run until Hazel Ray hit a free throw in the final seconds of the half.
The Coyotes stretched their advantage to 12 with a 10-2 run in the third. Makie found the scoring column again with six points while Ray and Conklin added two each.
The visitors pulled away in the fourth, making nine free throws, including a run of eight consecutive makes by the tandem of Malley Heidl and Emmi Makie in the final minute.
“I’m proud of the girls’ hustle and perseverance,” coach Carl Kanoff said. “ We missed a ton of layups and shots in the paint, but to our credit we did an incredible job rebounding on both ends of the floor.
“There was a lot of frustration but they kept at it. Things were pretty sloppy in stretches, but we have to be happy with winning on the road against an experienced, scrappy team on a night where not a lot went our way.”
Makie recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. She also had three steals. Ray contributed nine points, 19 rebounds and two assists; Conklin chipped in with six points, 12 rebounds, two assists and five blocks; Heidl added five points, three rebounds; and Williamson tacked on two points, 10 rebounds and two steals.
Candor (2-2) hosts Spencer-Van Etten (2-3) on Friday.
