IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: SLOW START DOOMS NEWARK VALLEY IN 71-57 LOSS TO GROTON (December 10, 2025)
Tioga County Sports ReportGROTON — Newark Valley dug itself a hole too deep to escape from in a 71-57 loss to Groton here Wednesday night in IAC boys basketball action.
"I thought we played well together offensively," said Newark Valley coach Scott Stratton. "We got good looks, but we just didn’t knock enough down, especially early.
"Tonight I was most concerned about our defensive execution," he added. W"e’ve got to be better."
The Red Hawks pumped in 24 points in the first eight minutes to build a 10-point lead.
Groton used a 14-6 run in the second quarter to take a 38-20 lead into the halftime break.
The Red Hawks stretched their lead to as many as 27 points, but Newark Valley closed the gap to 23, at 59-36, heading into the final eight minutes.
Tristan Veruto pumped in 10 points in the fourth quarter, and Tim Wojtysiak and Cooper Davis each knocked down 3-pointers in a 21-12 game-ending run for the Cardinals.
Davis led Newark Valley with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, and six rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
Wojtysiak added 12 points and eight rebounds, including five on the offensive boards, while Veruto had 12 points, three steals, and two offensive rebounds.
Newark Valley, now 1-3, hosts Edison Friday night.
