Tioga County Sports ReportONEONTA — Newark Valley used a strong second quarter to take a 13-point lead into the halftime break on its way to a 46-28 win over Windsor here Saturday in the consolation game of the Oneonta Tip-Off Tournament.
The Cardinals lost one of their top players in Kam Short after a collision resulted in a cut to the head, and eventually eight stitches.
"I’d say we overcame adversity to settle in and win one," said Newark Valley coach Greg Schweiger. "It was just an unfortunate collision."
Aubrey Kwiatkowski, who was named to the all-tournament team, and Elizabeth Phillips each knocked down 3-pointers and scored five points apiece, and Haven Aylesworth scored four points to help Newark Valley to a 14-11 lead after the opening stanza.
Kwiatkowski scored four points, and four of her teammates also put their name in the scorebook in the second quarter in a 12-2 run that gave the Cardinals a 26-13 lead heading into the halftime intermission.
The Cardinals went cold in the third quarter, but Windsor only managed to outscore them 7-5 to trim the deficit to 31-20 heading into the final eight minutes.
Newark Valley put the game away in the final eight minutes with six points by Adrianna Rich and a 3-pointer by Phillips fueling a 15-8 game-ending spurt.
Kwiatkowski led NV with 13 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, three assists, and six steals, while Rich had nine points, five rebounds, and three assists, and Phillips had eight points, including two 3-pointers, seven rebounds, and one blocked shot.
Aylesworth had eight points, seven boards and four steals for the Cardinals, and Gabbi James chipped in with four points and two assists.
Newark Valley, now 1-1, returns to action Thursday at Edison.
