NEWARK VALLEY — Cadin Creeley and Titus Callahan spent less than 16 minutes combined on the mat as they racked up 10 total victories to lead Newark Valley to the team title at the Larry Goodrich Memorial Wrestling Invitational here Saturday.
Callahan scored five falls, four in the first period, to win the title at 190 pounds. He spent 9:08 on the mat.
Creeley won at 165 with four pins, including three in the first period, and spent just 6:40 on the mat. His other win came via medical forfeit.
Logan Rhodes was second at 144 and Jack Blomberg was the runner-up at 285. Rhodes posted a 4-1 record with three pins while Blomberg was 4-2. Both of his setbacks came against Schuyler standout Dana Guild, a state qualifier last season.
Marcos Escalante (150) and Logan Woodin (157) placed third, each going 4-1 on the day. Woodin’s loss came against three-time state medalist Gene Edwards from Central Valley and Escalante fell to Hannibal’s Zenon Derocha, a 2024 state qualifier.
Fifth-place finishers included Logan Davis (138), who went 4-1 with three falls and a medical forfeit; Sheldon Houston (103) with a 2-2 mark; and Elijah Williams (175) with a 3-1 record.
Adama Kunze (103) went 1-3 and Avery Davis (110) went 2-3, and both placed sixth while the Cardinals had four 7th-place wrestlers and two more take eighth.
Placing seventh were Andrew Lelik, 3-2 at 118; Kenny Slater, 2-1 at 126; Leland Houston, 3-2 at 138; and Michael Wandell, 3-2 at 150. Taking eighth were Jacob Shipman (126) and Reuben Sherry (138). Shipman was 1-2 and Sherry went 1-1, giving up two medical forfeits to teammates.
Shane Davey (165) and Wyatt Dillow (215) both went 2-3, and Lucas Wood (144) was 1-3.
The Cardinals would score 200.5 points in the team challenge. Division I Rush-Henrietta was second with 196 and Central Valley took third with 188. Penfield and Elmira, both D-1 teams, were fourth (130.5) and fifth (127.5), respectively. Owego was 10th in the 16-team event with 81.5 points.
NOTE: A victory by medical forfeit counts as a win, but a loss by medical forfeit does not count on a wrestler’s record.
