IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: S-VE LOOKING TO IMPROVE (December 4, 2025)

SPENCER — The Spencer-Van Etten girls basketball team is looking to improve this season, especially at the offensive end of the court.

“I think we are going to be much improved from last year,” coach Justin Cole said. “Last year we played terrific defense all season but struggled to score ourselves. This year we are going to be aggressive on the offense end while maintaining our defensive integrity.”

S-VE will rely heavily on three returning letter winners in senior forwards Lauren Gillette and Kaylee Kastenhuber, and junior guard Kaidince Root. Gillette was an IAC South Small School second team all-star and Root received an honorable mention.

The Panthers’ lineup will include several juniors who are getting their first taste of varsity ball.

“The six new incoming juniors are all going to make an impact on the game and I'm looking forward to seeing how they play at the varsity level,” Cole said.

S-VE went 2-4 in the IAC South Small School division, but were 2-16 overall.

Among the graduation losses was Faith Brenchley, who was named to the IAC South Small School second team.

Once again, it’s a neighboring nemesis which could be the team to beat in the division.

“Candor has won our division the last two years, and being such a rival, they will be a good test,” Cole said.

S-VE opens the season this evening, hosting Section IV Class B qualifier Lansing (8-12 last season) at 7:30 p.m.
