IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY LOOKS TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE (December 3, 2025)

NEWARK VALLEY — The Newark Valley girls basketball team is looking to maintain its competitive edge this season and has a solid nucleus to work with.

Coach Greg Schweiger returns seven letter winners, including a pair of fourth-year players who earned second team Large School South honors. Point guard Aubrey Kwiatkowski and power forward Adriana Rich bring senior leadership to the court.

Kwiatkowski is the leading scorer among the returning players, having averaged 11.1 points per game last season while draining a team-high 38 3-pointers. Rich averaged 9.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.9 steals.

Another second team selection coming back is junior center Kam Short. She returns for her third season after averaging 9.3 points, 7.5 boards and 3.3 blocks.

Also back in the lineup are juniors Sarah Lamb, Cecelia Whitney and Malloy Chapman, and sophomore Haven Aylesworth. This will be the second season for each on the Cardinals’ varsity roster.

Schweiger also has a trio of newcomers whom he feels could make an impact. Sophomore point guard Gabriella James was the leading scorer on the JV squad last season while sophomore Lilly Cornell, a shooting guard, came into the district in the spring. Elizabeth Phillips, an 8th-grader, is looking to make an impact in the paint at power forward and center.

“This team will look to get better everyday and be competitive in the league by the end of the season,” Schweiger said. “We move back up to Class B this season so we will have to see whether we improve enough over the season to make an impact in the playoffs. Class B is loaded with some very tough teams and players at the top.”

Schweiger expects some tough competition within the IAC as well.

“Our Large School South division is led by Watkins Glen and I think Elmira Notre Dame will not be far behind,” he said. “As for postseason, every time we are in Class B we are chasing Chenango Forks and Susquehanna Valley, and this year is no different. Sidney and Watkins aren’t very far behind them.”

NV posted a 17-5 overall record last season and went 12-2 in the league. The Cardinals would draw the number one seed for the Section IV Class C tournament, but fell to Unatego in the semifinals.

The Cardinals graduated three players off last season’s team. They were first-team all-star Adrianna Finta, honorable mention Livia Short and Rebecca Thompson.
