SECTION IV FOOTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY DROPS SEASON FINALE TO GROTON (2025-11-01)

GROTON — Groton scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat Newark Valley, 28-14, in Section IV Division VII football action here Saturday.
With the score deadlocked at 14, the Red Hawks’ Kameron McClain threw a 16-yard TD pass to Jerome Turner at 11:55. Lane Darling took it in from the one with 5:51 to go to secure the win. McClain threw to Brett Deuel and Sean Green for the two-point conversions to make it 28-14.
Cooper Davis scored on a 12-yard run with 8:18 remaining in the second quarter, then kicked the PAT to give NV a 7-0 lead.
The Red Hawks came back to score on McClain’s 16-yard pass to Green with 3:04 left in the half. The PAT kick was blocked, making it 7-6.
Tim Wojtysiak picked off McClain with 41 seconds to go before the break.
Groton went up, 14-7, with 3:23 to go in the third quarter on Darling’s 1-yard run and the Red Hawks converted the two-point PAT try.
The Cardinals responded quickly on Zion King’s 50-yard run at 2:36. Davis split the uprights to knot the score at 14.
Five NV backs combined for 259 yards rushing. Jackson Hoover had three carries for 64 yards, King had 63 on seven rushes and Davis contributed 62 on five runs. Nate Hinckley toted the rock 11 times for 54 yards and Logan Rhodes tacked on 16 more on seven runs.
Hinckley went 1-for-5 passing with a 3-yard toss to King and Hoover was 0-for-1.
The Red Hawks went to the air frequently with McClain going 20-for-30 for 276 yards to seven different receivers. Green led the way with seven receptions for 145 yards. They also had 106 yards rushing with Darling carrying the ball 12 times for 55 yards.
Groton improves to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the division. NV ends its season at 3-6 and 1-4 in the division.
