MARATHON — Eighth-grader Hadley Merrill and senior Brook Illsley posted top-5 finishes to lead Newark Valley to a second-place finish here Saturday in the Girls Unseeded race at the rugged Marathon Invitational, while Newark Valley senior Leland Houston was top boys finisher from Tioga County.

Delhi-South Kortright won the team title with 64 placement points, while the Cardinals had 72 points, third-place O-M had 78 points, and fourth-place Southern Cayuga had 126.

Merrill finished second and clocked in with a time of 21:12.3, and Illsley was fifth in a time of 21:43.1.

Sophomore Leah Lansing finished 10th for the Cardinals in a time of 24:24.4, while senior Olivia Vaughn was 29th in 24:37.4, and Malerie Gregow was 38th in 25:16.7.

Senior Savannah Beebe was 57th for NV in a time of 26:25.4, while junior Abigail Escalante was 67th in 27:02.7, sophomore Elle Webb was 71st in 27:20.6, and senior Emily LaPorte was 81st in 28:08.

S-VE junior Madelyn Ellison finished 12th in 22:51.8, while teammate senior Grace Bishop was 103rd in 31:24.5.

Sophomore Zoey Lang led Candor with a 14th-place finish in a time of 23:04, and senior Calli Marsh was 88th in 28:48.3.

BOYS
Houston finished 14th in a time of 18:51, while senior Marcos Escalante was 24th in 19:27, and junior Camden King was 36th in 20:25.

Candor senior Gage Maxwell finished 40th in a time of 20:35, while freshman Declan Shaw was 48th in 20:49, and Newark Valley 8th-grader Sheldon Houston was 50th in 20:52.

Newark Valley sophomore Shyly Payne finished 62nd in 21:15, while senior Hunter Tyrell was 98th in 23:00, and junior Andrew Lelik was 111th in 23:57.

Newark Valley sophomore Reese Illsley was 119th in 24:21, and sophomore Rex Chapman was 122nd.
