IAC GIRLS SOCCER: SVEC DROPS 2-1 HEARTBREAKER TO UNION SPRINGS IN SEASON FINALE (2025-10-08)
Tioga County Sports ReportCANDOR — A tough season for a young SVEC squad ended with a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Union Springs in the final minute here Wednesday afternoon in IAC Large School crossover girls soccer action.
Sometimes things in sports just don’t go your way," said SVEC coach Michael Leljedal. "Unfortunately that was the microcosm of our season.
"I’m sure we sounded like a broken record to the girls all year long with the sentiment that we belonged in every game we played in," he noted. "Truly we don’t feel like 4-11 is the accurate representation of the team that we were.
"There were a handful of our losses that we found ourselves either winning in the second half or tied, but couldn’t find a way to get over the hump," added Leljedal. "Last night was once again that story all over. Up at half and controlling the game, but let up control and ultimately Union Springs scored the winner with 20 seconds left."
Sophomore Allie Lyon, off an assist from junior Meradyth Stouffer, put the Eagles up 1-0 in the 22nd minutes.
They maintained the lead until midway through the second half when the Wolves scored to tie the game.
Union Springs scored again with 20 seconds remaining to pull out a 2-1 win.
Both teams had 10 shots-on-goal, while SVEC had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Freshman Alaina Yeirer recorded eight saves in net for the Eagles.
SVEC wraps up the 2025 season with a 4-11 record.
"Everyone is greatly disappointed as they should be," said Leljedal. "We had high hopes and we fell quite a ways short of them.
"I feel deeply disappointed for our incredible group of seniors. They worked so hard and to have this be their senior season is something that upsets me.
"We still have a really strong core group returning next year and some young girls coming up who are going to offer us help both in the starting lineup and depth on the bench," noted Leljedal.
"There are plans throughout winter and spring to keep the girls connected to the game and continuing to build this program," he added.
