IAC GIRLS SOCCER: 8TH-GRADER STEVENS LIFTS SVEC TO 3-0 WIN AT UNION SPRINGS (7 PHOTOS) (2025-10-04)
Tioga County Sports ReportUNION SPRINGS — Eighth-grader Melanie Stevens scored a pair of goals and dished out one assist to lead SVEC to a 3-0 win over Union Springs here Friday afternoon in IAC Large School crossover girls soccer action.
"What a victory," said SVEC coach Michael Leljedal. "Coach Decker and I cannot begin to describe what it took from the girls to pull out this victory.
"Having two games in 15 hours and being in the middle of six games in eight days ... they fought so hard against a really tough opponent.
"They know what’s at stake for every game we have left," noted Leljedal. "Lose and we’re out of sectionals, and because of their effort today we can fight for another day.
"We scored in the first 30 seconds of the game and from there we didn’t look back.
"A huge shoutout to 8th-grader Melanie Stevens for scoring two crucial goals today, but really it was a team effort," he added. "Freshman Alaina Yeier in her first year as goalie has made such incredible growth and showed today when she stopped a 1-on-1 opportunity. We’re proud of all the girls."
Stevens, off an assist from sophomore Allie Lyon, scored in the opening minute of the contest to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
They maintained the one-goal lead until Lyon, off a feed from Stevens, scored with 2 minutes remaining in the first half to up the advantage to 2-0.
Stevens, off an assist from Junior Meradyth Stouffer, scored about seven minutes after the intermission to provide the final margin.
SVEC had a 10-7 edged in shots-on-goal, and a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Alaina Yeirer recorded seven saves in net for the Eagles.
SVEC, now 4-9, returns to action Monday when it hosts Tioga at Candor High School for Senior Night. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
