IAC BOYS SOCCER: SVEC SCORES LATE TO WIN BACK-AND-FORTH, 5-4, AFFAIR AGAINST WATKINS GLEN (2025-09-30)

Tioga County Sports Report
WATKINS GLEN — Kyle Jantz scored two goals and dished out two assists, and Xavier Beach scored the game-winner in the final minutes of the game in SVEC's 5-4 win over Watkins Glen in a back-and-forth affair here Tuesday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division girls soccer action.

With the win, SVEC improves to 6-4 on the season, and qualifies for the upcoming Section IV playoffs.

"We went into the game knowing that Watkins Glen was in good form its last few games, so it was going to be a tough match," said SVEC coach Jason Banks.

"Our players were able to show real grit tonight to come back twice and eventually score the winner late in the game.

“As a team, coach Holmes and I are pleased with how the guys are developing throughout this season," added Banks. "Our goal was to get better one day at a time, and to qualify for sectionals. With this win, we were able to accomplish that goal."

Jantz scored the first goal of the game, but the Lake Hawks answered with a goal by Michael Purpura, who scored all four of Watkins Glen's goal, to tie the game at 1-1, which is where it stood at the halftime intermission.

The second half was a goal-scoring delight.

Nate Morse put the Eagles ahead 2-1 early in the second half, but Watkins Glen answered with a pair of quick goals to take a 3-2 lead.

Logan Smith scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3, but Purpura scored his fourth goal on a penalty kick to put the Lake Hawks ahead, 4-3, with 16 minutes remaining.

About seven minutes later, Jantz scored his second goal of the game to tie the game at 4-4.

With 2:43 remaining, Beach netted the eventual game-winner to give SVEC a 5-4 lead.

SVEC had a 13-11 edge in shots-on-goal, while Watkins Glen had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Brennan Zimmer recorded eight saves in net for the Eagles.

SVEC returns to action Thursday when it hosts Notre Dame at Candor High School.
