NEWARK VALLEY — Elizabeth Vancise scored a pair of goals and Delaney Reilly recorded a hat trick in the assist department as Marathon defeated a less-experienced Newark Valley team, 6-0, in Section IV field hockey action here Tuesday.
The Cardinals struggled offensively early, but managed to hold the Olympians’ offense at bay for the majority of the first quarter. Marathon kept the ball on the NV side of the field for most of the period, but couldn’t find the cage until the buzzer when Vancise scored on a penalty corner with the assist going to Miah Williams.
The Olympians’ numbers and experience gave the visitors an advantage that NV could not match. Marathon came in with a 16-player roster which includes eight seniors and five juniors.
“It's hard,” coach Jessica Doehring said. “We have two seniors. Right now, we only have 11 players. One of them is brand new this year, so it's learning every game.”
The Olympians, who took nearly half their shots in the opening quarter, converted all their shots in the second quarter to build a 4-0 halftime cushion.
Williams scored at 13:38 with Reilly notching her first assist. Izabella Conklin added an unassisted goal at the 9-minute mark and Vancise tacked on her second goal with 5:02 left in the half. Savanna Warfield picked up the assist.
“Second quarter was rough,” Doehring said. “We definitely struggled to move the ball out of our defensive third.”
NV would control the ball better in the second half.
“Possession-wise, I think we maintained possession more in the second half, but we just struggled to capitalize on it and, unfortunately, when they did get possession, they were able to take it down,” Doehring said.
Marathon would score single goals in the third and fourth quarters.
Jamison Conklin tallied at 5:55 of the third and Mackenzie Potter found the back of the cage with six minutes to go in the fourth. Reilly assisted on both goals.
The Olympians had 16 shots and three corners while NV took one shot and had two corners
Ashleen Callahan made 10 saves in goal for the Cardinals and Mattie Patten had one for Marathon.
Team morale has been positive for the most part.
“I think today was a little disappointing, a little rough, but overall, I think it's been pretty good,” Doehring said.
Newark Valley heads to Greene Friday for a 6 p.m. contest.
