IAC GIRLS SOCCER: WATKINS GLEN PULLS AWAY FROM SVEC (3 PHOTOS) (2025-09-09)
Tioga County Sports ReportWATKINS GLEN — Watkins Glen scored two goals late in the first half, and pulled away in the second half in a 7-1 win over SVEC here Tuesday in IAC South Large School Division girls soccer action.
“Sometimes in sports the final score doesn’t always reflect the reality of the game," said SVEC coach Michael Leljedal.
"Credit to Watkins Glen, they are going to be a powerhouse again this year, but I felt like our girls held out for a solid portion of the game," he noted. "At no point in the game did I feel like we didn’t belong on that field with them.
"We’re still trying to figure out our identity and positionally what works best for us, but in both games now there have been flashes of what I know this team can be.
"The girls aren’t letting the two early defeats get them down, they’re hungry and determined to fight and put together a really successful season," added Leljedal.
Watkins Glen led 2-0 when 8th-grader Melanie Stevens chased down a feed from Meradyth Stouffer on a breakaway, and beat the keeper for her first varsity goal with 18:07 remaining in the first half.
Watkins Glen's Ava Kelly, who had a hat trick in the win, scored her second goal with 4:43 remaining in the first half to give the Lake Hawks a 4-1 lead at the intermission.
Michaela Wheaton ended any doubts for the Lake Hawks with a goal in the first three minutes of the second half to make it 5-1.
SVEC, 0-2, returns to action Friday at Trumansburg.
"We have a tough stretch coming up with three games in four days against some tough opponents, but they’re motivated to get things on the right track and playing some good soccer," said Leljedal.
