WATKINS GLEN — Newark Valley kept the scores close, but came up short by a trio of 25-20 scores in its season opener against Watkins Glen Wednesday.

For the Cardinals, Anaya Aylesworth posted six aces, eight digs and one kill; Haven Aylesworth had four kills and one dig; Adrianna Rich contributed two aces, four digs and three kills; Emilee Rhodes added three assists, an ace and a dig; and Emma Fenner tacked on three digs and four assists.

Anna Franzese led the Lake Hawks with 13 service points, five aces, six assists, one kill and one dig. Kaylee Yaw contributed four kills, one dig and five service points; Leighann Landers had seven service points, six aces and four digs; Paige Ells had seven pitched in with service points, five aces, two kills and three digs; Ellery Thaete chipped in with two kills, one block and one service point; Xanthe Tappan recorded eight service points, four aces, three assists, three kills and three digs; and Krysta Yaw tacked on one service point.

JV: Watkins Glen defeated Newark Valley, 2-1.
