OWEGO — The Owego girls tennis team nearly swept Norwich in the River Hawks’ 6-1 home-opening victory Wednesday. Only a forfeit allowed the Purple Tornado to avoid a shutout.
At first singles, Merri Westcott defeated Riley Wolford, 6-4, 6-3.
Jana Nikulich went the distance at second singles, rallying for a 3-6, 6-1, 6- victory over Finley Farrow.
Elaina Anschutz was impressive in a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Rori Gates at third singles.
Betty Pellicano completed the singles sweep, winning 6-3,6-1 over Paulina He at fourth singles.
Owego took both contested doubles clashes with well-earned victories.
At first doubles, Hailey Griep and Maddie Delaney won 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) against Selina Lian and Marianna Chetronie.
Shatha Alotaibi and Emma Dixon outlasted Maria Miranda-Cruz and Skylr Newman, 7-5, 7-5 at second doubles.
Owego (1-1) visits Susquehanna Valley Friday.
