OWEGO — Sawyer Prentiss captured medalist honors and Carter Rieg shot a career best score to lead Owego to its first victory of the season Tuesday, 213-235, over Susquehanna Valley at The Golf Club at Owego.
“It was nice,” said coach Chris Evans. “The kids are keen. It was just nice to have some seniors who decided that, they're watching lots of YouTube golf, and they get inspired and I guess they want to play golf this year, which is really nice.”
Evans has noticed a difference when the kids are practicing on the driving range.
“I've got some kids earlier standing on the range, just listening to them hit the ball, it sounds a lot different than last year. You can tell when somebody hits the ball squarely. You can tell when it's going, you know where it should go and there's a little bit more talent. 213 is a pretty good score for us.”
Prentiss posted a 38 while Rieg was right on his heels with a 39. Duke Snyder had a solid round as well, posting a 40.
“I expected it from Sawyer,” Evans said. ”Sawyer Prentiss has been playing this game a long time, although not for the school. He's been playing other sports. His swing is so compact that he's just not going to get in a lot of trouble. If he gets his short game going, the 38's going to become a 35. His short game needs work.
“Carter Rieg kind of came out of nowhere today. That's by far a career best for him, shooting a 39. I would have expected that. And Duke Snyder shot a 40. He was on his way to shooting a great round, probably close to a 36, 37, and I think he struggled right there at the end.
“Those three guys, I'm so happy for them,” Evans added. “Duke had a great round yesterday at En-Joie, shooting a 79. And as long as we get Jordan Snyder, who's hitting the ball pretty well, (going). Again, it's all short game work. If these kids would work on 100 yards and in as much as they do hitting a driver, they would all be in the 30s.”
Connor Kotski and Beckett Tirinato rounded out the River Hawks’ scoring with 47 and 49, respectively. Jordan Snyder added a non-scoring 51.
Sus Valley was led by Adam Spisak with a 44. Carson Geiser had a 46, Matt Latini and Theo Streno each contributed a 47 and Dom Faiella shot 51. Cam Vanderlinde recorded a non-scoring 51.
Wyatt Prentiss had a solid showing for the River Hawks’ JV team, shooting a 47, while Landon Boccasini contributed a 48. Cal Smith shot 52, and Hudson Brigham and Cam Thole both scored 54.
Owego (1-2) travels to Norwich (1-0) Wednesday.
