CANDOR — With solid numbers, longtime Candor volleyball coach Pam Quinlan is looking to piece together a line-up in 2025 to defend the Coyotes' Class D state title.

Quinlan, entering her 29th season as varsity coach, is glad to be back on the court.

"It never gets old," she said. "It's always a different group, they bring the excitement, they bring their passion, and make it easy to be here.

"The varsity numbers are good, the JV a little low, but it's a great group of kids, and they are working hard.

"Last year, our modified program had a pretty good-sized group of 7th-graders, so we'll have a big group of 8th-graders, and we're hoping to get six or seven 7th-graders coming in," noted Quinlan. "It's hard to know right now, since the modified season doesn't start until the end of October.

"Numbers aren't really our concern," she added. "I guess our concern is staying healthy and keeping everyone on the court."

Quinlan says the preseason is a return to the basics.

"Getting the girls to be focused in the preseason is part of our focus.

"For me, looking at a line-up, trying to get everybody to their strengths and getting players use to playing next to each other ... switches on the court and the decisions that have to be made between two people — 'whose ball is it?' I think that's always a focus for us," she said.

"And, I think the basics of serving and passing are always something you have to spend a lot of time on — just working on that muscle memory, and making the kids understand that's really your bread-and-butter, and that setting and hitting is the icing," Quinlan added.

Candor will host Dryden for a scrimmage Wednesday, and then head to Trumansburg Thursday for a four-team scrimmage.

Candor opens the 2025 season at home against O-M on Sept. 3.
