CORTLAND - OFA girls' lacrosse ran up against a stellar Queensbury squad out of Section II on Friday, falling to the Spartans in the Class C State Semifinal at SUNY Cortland, 21-11.
The Spartans came out of the gates with an aggressive and physical style of play, controlling possession and netting four goals in the first quarter. Madison McEvoy had Owego's lone goal in the opening stanza.
In the second quarter, Owego found an offensive spark from Jenna McEvoy and Lexi Herceg, who combined for five scores, three from Herceg and two from McEvoy. The Spartans, however, used multiple free position shots to net five goals of their own to take a halftime lead of 9-6.
Queensbury scored back-to-back goals to start the second half, but Madison McEvoy found the back of the net at the 6:46 mark to cut into the Spartan lead. Queensbury answered the senior though, with another goal, before Herceg came right back with a score to make things 12-8.
With a minute left, Queensbury found the net twice within 30 seconds, but Herceg again responded for Owego with her fifth goal of the day coming with only 02.1 remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth, the Spartans went on another run, scoring three consecutive goals, before Owego's Jenna McEvoy snapped one in the net at the 9:09 mark. Queensbury netted two more, but once again Jenna McEvoy tried to stop the momentum with another score, this time on an assist from Izzy Herceg.
Queensbury finished out the game with a power play goal, followed by the final score of the game to win 21-11.
Lexi Herceg finished with five goals and was selected to the All Tournament Team. Jenna McEvoy found the back of the net four times, while Madison McEvoy scored twice.
Izzy Herceg tallied an assist and Mikayla Wilbur led the River Hawks in ground balls with two. Goalie, Shannon Maslin recorded 13 saves in the semifinal matchup.
Senior, Ashleigh Steele was awarded the game's sportsmanship award as well.
"This season has been nothing short of unbelievable. Obviously tonight was very hard and heartbreaking to watch. I truly hope the girls hold onto all the amazing things they accomplished this season," said Owego head coach, Ashlee Marsh.
OFA girls' lacrosse finished the 2025 season with a 14-4 record, while winning the Section IV Class C Championship, a Regional Title and becoming the first OFA girls' lacrosse team to reach the State Semifinals.
"These memories will last a lifetime. Saying goodbye to our seniors is never easy, especially with this group. They have been the backbone to our program for a long time and their legacy will live on," added Marsh.
