Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON - Owego softball put the bat on the ball in Wednesday's Section IV Class A semifinal, but struggled to get runs home, ultimately falling to Chenango Valley, 9-3 to finish the season.
Both teams put runners on in the first two innings, but each team was able to work through their respective jams without surrendering any runs.
Chenango Valley put together a big home half of the third inning, plating seven runs to take a big lead, which they would not give up.
After a scoreless fourth, the River Hawks scored their only three runs of the game in the top part of the fifth inning.
Joslynn Space led off the inning with a single to right field, followed by back-to-back home runs to center field by Eva Crawford and Carsten Crawford. Miley Laubach, Maia Smith and Audrionna Howe then knocked three base-hits in a row to load the bases, but Chenango Valley got out of the inning without allowing anymore runs.
The Warriors went on to plate two more runs to put the game away.
Space and Crawford combined to pitch six innings, allowing a total of five hits and three earned runs. Space struck out three on the day, while Crawford fanned seven. Crawford earned her 100th strikeout of the season, doing so for the second consecutive year.
Eva Crawford went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a home run. Carsten Crawford also homered, while Howe and Laubach both went 2-for-4. Space had a base-hit to go with a run scored, and both Smith and Elise Silvanic finished with a hit each.
Owego softball finishes the 2025 campaign with a record of 12-5.
"Nobody wants to lose their last game and everybody hopes to win all the way to the state championship, but this team defied a lot of odds," said Owego coach, Emily Crawford.
"We lost four really important seniors last year, and having new faces at every position except pitcher and catcher, this group rallied behind each other and saw the fruits of their labor from the off-season workouts to the last out today."
"We have a ton of youngsters that we will be looking for to make major contributions in the year to come. I am excited to see what 2026 will bring for Owego softball," added coach Crawford.
