SECTION IV SOFTBALL: SVEC BATTLES BACK IN THE RAIN, BUT FALLS SHORT IN FIRST ROUND SECTIONAL MATCHUP WITH WHITNEY POINT (2025-05-23)

Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON - After a postponement followed by a venue change, the Eagles faced off with Whitney Point in a rain soaked, but high scoring Section IV Class B first round matchup at Greenlight Grand Slam Park on Friday, with the Golden Eagles pulling out the victory, 20-15.
The constant rain throughout the game made pitching very difficult on both sides, as control was an issue due to the slick conditions.
SVEC grabbed a 4-2 lead in the first inning after multiple walks, and both Katelyn Klym and Maddy Ashby driving in runs.
Whitney Point worked the base paths in the second to grab a pair of runs to tie the game.
In the third inning, Ashby reached base after being hit by a pitch. Ashby would advance all the way home after several passed balls. In the bottom of the third, Whitney Point put together a huge inning with three doubles, as well as multiple singles and walks to plate 13 runs for a commanding 17-5 lead.
The Eagles spent the next three innings showing great resilience by chipping away at the scoreboard.
In the fourth, SVEC plated three runs. Elliana Middlebrook led off with a walk and Faith Brenchley also worked a walk to put two runners on. Klym stepped to the plate and smacked a triple to right field, driving in both Middlebrook and Brenchley. Ashby then grounded out, but in the process, scored Klym.
The Eagles continued to fight back, by tacking on five more runs in the fifth. Whitney Point however, picked up three runs of their own in the home half of the inning to stay ahead, 20-13.
In the sixth inning, Brenchley ripped a triple to left field that drove home Trinity Dashler and Emma Neish for SVEC's final runs of the game.
Klym went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Brenchley was 1-for-2, while scoring three runs. Both Klym and Brenchley earned triples on the day.
Ashby finished 2-for-3, driving in four runs and scoring three times. Middlebrook, Dashler, Neish, and Katelynn VanEtten all scored runs in the game as well.
The Eagles finish the 2025 season with a record of 7-11.
"We grew a lot as a team this year," said SVEC co-coach Sheila Bowman.
"Gaining Middlebrook as a pitcher really helped us fight through this season, but late season injuries put us in a tough situation, facing a team we split with earlier this year," commented Bowman.
"In all of the games that the girls could have given up in, they persevered. We lost a couple players late in the season due to injuries, but today proved that anyone can step up, hit some balls and make some plays," said SVEC co-coach Megan Friscia.
"I will miss my seniors who have been a key part in our softball program for upwards of five years, but I am looking forward to this young group and the future of the program," added Friscia.
