Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO - Owego came into today needing a win to force a tie-breaker with Chenango Valley for the top spot in the STAC Central, but Waverly had other plans, defeating the River Hawks, 11-6 thanks to a Wolverine grand slam in the seventh inning.
OFA started the game strong, retiring Waverly in order, then plating four runs in the home half of the first inning.
Eva Crawford tripled in the second at-bat for Owego and was then driven in by a Carsten Crawford single. Miley Laubach knocked a base-hit that advanced Crawford to third, putting runners on the corners. After a Maia Smith ground ball resulted in an error, Crawford reached home for the second run of the inning.
With two outs, another Waverly error allowed both Laubach and Smith to score.
Waverly cut into Owego's lead with two runs of their own in the second. After a scoreless third inning, Owego earned their fifth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Joslynn Space hit a line drive single to center field that drove in Elise Silvanic.
After both teams scored a run each in the fifth inning, the Wolverines got four home in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Waverly's Maddison Cron belted a grand slam to score four more runs and put the game away.
Both Space and Carsten Crawford went 2-for-4 with an RBI each. Laubach, Smith, Eva Crawford, and Silvanic all scored a run in the game.
Owego will now begin preparation for postseason play that begins next week.
