SECTION IV FLAG: OFA USES DOMINANT RUN GAME FOR SEASON SWEEP OF CHENANGO VALLEY (2025-05-03)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO - The River Hawks racked up big yards with their run game in a rain soaked Saturday showdown against Chenango Valley, taking down the Warriors, 46-14 on senior night.

OFA got on the board first with a touchdown pass from Ashlyn Dalton to Olivia Dodge. The continuous steady rain, however, forced both teams to then focus on the rushing attack going forward.

After forcing a Chenango Valley punt, Owego went right back to work on their second drive with a Dalton quarterback keep to score and go ahead 14-0.

The River Hawks' defense continued it's shutdown ways, causing another Warrior punt. OFA's offense followed up with a Bella Silvestri rushing touchdown for their third score in as many possessions.

Neither team was able to find the end zone during their next drive. After Chenango Valley forced a turnover on downs, the Warriors flipped the field on Owego with a big run. Chenango Valley then executed a nice reverse play to move the ball inside the one-yard line, before running it in for their first touchdown of the game.

The River Hawks responded though, with a 54-yard touchdown run from Dalton with short time left on the clock, taking a 27-7 lead into the half.

Less than three minutes into the second half, Dalton broke off another big touchdown run, going 61-yards this time for the score. Dalton would score her fourth touchdown of the game, four minutes later to put Owego ahead 40-7.

The pace slowed over the remainder of the game, but with 7:33 left, the Warriors were able to get their second score of the night after a long sustained drive.

Owego's Lexi Herceg responded though, taking over quarterback duties and keeping it herself for a 62-yard touchdown run on the next possession for the game's final score.

Dalton earned five total touchdowns in Saturday's game, four rushing and one throwing.

Silvestri and Herceg had a rushing score each, while Olivia Dodge caught Owego's lone touchdown reception of the game.

Dodge was a force on the defensive side of the ball, totaling 10 tackles, while Elizabeth Reigle had nine. Reigle and Silvestri had a sack each as well.

When asked how the team has stepped up in recent weeks, Olivia Dodge said "It's really unique to see how we have all been able to add to our skill sets, and also be able to change for when we face different teams."

Before tonight's game, Owego flag football honored their seniors, which included Lexi Cheeseman, Mary Cox, Olivia Dodge, Cadia Fain, Lexi Herceg, Kayla Newman, Elizabeth Reigle, Bella Silvestri, and Isabella Vianna.

When asked what this senior class of players has meant to her, Dodge said "This class has some of my best friends. I have played flag and soccer with many of them, so it's really cool to finish senior year with this one last season together."

"It's been unbelievable. These girls were freshman when we first started the team, so it's pretty emotional to see them grow from then to now," said coach Rusty Virkler.

"Hopefully we have a lot of flag football left this season to enjoy with them," added Virkler.

OFA will be on the road for their next game, facing Waverly on Tuesday.
