Spencer-Van Etten / Candor 8th-grader Elliana Middlebrook made a big statement in the pitcher's circle, while Athens junior Abby Burgess had a record-breaking performance, and Corning senior Brenden Jardin-Reed played a big part in the Hawks' 3-0 week. They are The Sports Reports / Ziff Law Firm Regional "Athletes of the Week."

SVEC'S MIDDLEBROOK, ATHENS' BURGESS NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL GIRLS "ATHLETES OF THE WEEK"
A struggling SVEC turned to Middlebrook, and the 8th-grade hurler responded with three strong pitching performances.
 
In victories over Dryden, Trumansburg and Chenango Forks, Middlebrook pitched a combined 16.1 innings, striking out 29 and allowing only one earned run.

At the plate, Middlebrook picked up two hits with two RBI, and two runs scored.

Burgess turned in a strong performance at the Lasagna Track & Field Invite in Wyalusing Friday. She won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.22 seconds, breaking the meet record previously held by Athens grad Breanna Gambrell.

Burgess also won the 200-meter dash in 26.45 seconds, and was fourth in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.82. She also ran on the 1,600-meter relay that finished eighth.

On Tuesday, Burgess won the 100, 200, and 400, and was on the winning 1,600-meter relay in a four-team meet at Athens.

Honorable Mentions: Northeast Bradford's Makenna Callear (softball), Wellsboro's Lauren Kosek (track & field), and Corning's Delaney Abel (golf).

CORNING'S JARDIN-REED NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL BOYS "ATHLETE OF THE WEEK"
Jardin-Reed played an integral part in Corning's 3-0 week with his play on face-offs.

Jardin-Reed's face off win with 10 seconds left in the half led to him racing down and scoring to give Corning a lead in a game they won by one goal.

He was also 16-for-16 on face offs against UE and he had another goal in a win over Horseheads.
