Tioga County Sports Report
AURORA - Newark Valley traveled to Southern Cayuga for IAC baseball action on Wednesday, but came out on the wrong end of a double header, dropping both games to the Chiefs, 12-0 and 22-8.
Joshua Karp managed the Cardinals only hit of the first game. The Chiefs put two on the board in the first, along with four more in the home half of the second inning. Southern Cayuga went on to score three runs in both the third and fourth innings.
Southern Cayuga's Isaac Brozon was excellent on the mound, going all five innings and striking out 14 during game one.
In game two of the double header, the Cardinals looked much better from the plate, but still couldn't keep pace with a strong Chiefs offense.
The Chiefs lead off the game with seven runs right out of the gate in the top part of the first inning, but Newark Valley tacked on two of their own in the bottom half.
Joshua Benjamin doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball, Karp then worked a walk to put two runners on and Gabe Merrill singled to drive them in.
Southern Cayuga plated two more in the second and another four in the third. Newark Valley stayed in the fight however, bringing five runs in during the bottom of the third.
Merrill reached base on another single and Kenny Slater got on after being hit by a pitch. Scott Wager hit a base knock, scoring Merrill and advancing Slater to third. Slater would score on a passed ball and Brenton Payne made it to third on the same pitch. Payne reached home after Carter Smith grounded out to first. In the next at-bat, Wager got home on another passed ball.
Merrill would come to the plate again and drive in the final run of the inning.
The Chiefs wouldn't let up though, getting four more runs home in the fourth and putting the game away with another five runs in the fifth.
Gabe Merrill was 4-for-4 in game two of the double header. Merrill finished with four RBIs in the game as well. Benjamin went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Wager and Smith had an RBI each. Slater, Karp and Payne all scored a run in game two.
Newark Valley is back on the field April 28th, traveling to Moravia.
