IAC SOFTBALL: NEWARK VALLEY TAKES CARE OF BUSINESS ON THEIR HOME DIAMOND BY BESTING MARATHON (2025-04-21)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY - After falling to Marathon last week, the Cardinals got one back on Monday, downing the Olympians, 15-6 at home.
Newark Valley made a statement early with four runs in the first inning. Kayden Rockwell reached base on a single to start, quickly advancing to second and then to third on a ball hit by Lilly Cornell.
Kaitlyn Keith would follow with a walk. Abby DeBolt put a ball in play with her at-bat, reaching base on an error, but bringing in Rockwell. Keith would steal third and then home for the Cardinals' second run of the inning.
With two outs, Haven Aylesworth knocked a triple to centerfield to score the other two runs of the inning for Newark Valley.
Marathon responded with all six of their runs coming in the top part of the second inning, but the Cardinals regained the lead with a huge eight run bottom half of the third.
Keith tripled to begin the third, and was driven in by a DeBolt single. Laura Ludwig singled next, followed by back-to-back walks and a run scoring. Cecelia Whitney worked a walk to allow another run to cross and give Newark Valley the lead.
After the fourth walk of the inning scored Hattie Hines, Rockwell tripled to right field, clearing the bases and driving in three more for the Cardinals. Cornell would lay down a sacrifice to the pitcher to get Rockwell home before the inning came to an end.
Newark Valley earned two more runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to pick up their third win of the season.
"Today was a good one. We meant business today, and had fun at the same time," coach Val Fischer said.
"We were smart on the bases and put the ball in play. The biggest plus for us was limiting our errors in the field."
Rockwell went 3-for-3 from the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. DeBolt was two-for-four, scoring three runs and driving in two. Haven Aylesworth and Whitney both knocked in three runners, while Ludwig crossed home plate four times in the contest.
DeBolt pitched all seven innings for the Cardinals, striking out 14.
Newark Valley softball will take the field next in a double header at Southern Cayuga on Wednesday.
