AURORA - The Cardinals' tennis team dropped a hard fought IAC match to Southern Cayuga on Monday, 4-1, in their regular season opener on the road.

Nathan Engbith filled in for Michael Wandell, but lost his first singles match in straight sets to Jordan Heiman, 6-0, 6-1.

Newark Valley's Emma Smith lost the second singles competition, 6-2, 6-1 to Alex Overhiser, while the Cardinals' loan win of the day came from Owen Jerabek. Jerabek defeated Jake Gentry, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action, Southern Cayuga's Kalub Allen and Daegan Miller bested Vincent Finta and Brianna Noble, 6-4, 7-5 in a highly competitive match.

Second doubles resulted in Victor VanDewater and Sophia Vitale defeating Newark Valley's Andrew Lelik and Joseph Jerabek in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

The Cardinals will be on their home court Thursday to take on Watkins Glen.
