OWEGO - OFA softball picked up their second win in less than 48 hours, defeating South Lewis out of Section III, 13-3 Saturday morning.

The game was historic in the sense that in the bottom of the first inning, Carsten Crawford became the first Owego player to hit an over the fence home run on OFA's now three-year old home field. The homer was a two-run shot and was followed by Miley Laubach scoring another run that was driven in by a Maia Smith single to center field, putting Owego out in front 3-0.

In the third, Owego tacked on another run. The River Hawks' loaded the bases after Crawford doubled, Laubach was hit by a pitch and Joslyn Space reached first on a beautiful bunt. Crawford was able to get home when Audrionna Howe put a ball in play to advance the runners.

Carsten Crawford was equally impressive on the mound Saturday. The junior pitched her second consecutive game where she went four scoreless innings. The OFA ace recorded nine strikeouts, without giving up a hit or any walks Saturday. Crawford went 2-for-2 from the plate with one home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Offensively, Owego's biggest inning of the morning came in the bottom of the fourth. Lexi Cheeseman reached base first with a hard hit ball up the middle, followed by a Geneva Crawford double and a Carsten Crawford walk that loaded the bases once again. Laubach sent a ground ball to right field that advanced Carsten to third and scored both Cheeseman and Geneva Crawford.

Laubach stole second and Smith walked to load the bases back up. Space came to the plate next and singled to bring in Crawford, as well as advance Labauch and Smith. An Elise Silvanic single scored the final two runs of the inning and put Owego in the driver's seat 10-0.

South Lewis showed no quit, brining in three runs over the next three innings.

OFA's final three runs came from a Laubach double that scored Cheeseman and Geneva Crawford. Laubach would go on to reach home that inning as well, when Space drove a single out to center field.

Laubach went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a run. Space finished Saturday going 4-for-4 and driving in three. Lexi Cheeseman added four hits of her own to go with three runs scored. Silvanic ended the morning with two RBIs, while Smith and Howe chipped in one each as well.

Space logged two innings in relief of Crawford. She gave up a run, but struck out four.

Coach Emily Crawford viewed the bats as the highlight of today's game.

"The girls were putting the ball in play, working the count and finding green to get themselves on base," said Crawford.

The OFA head softball coach also spoke on the importance of gaining experience in the beginning stages of the regular season.

"It's very important early on to get girls their reps so that they feel more confident. That way by the end of the year there's no hiccups and we're ready to go," added Crawford.

The next game on the schedule for the River Hawks is April 2nd at home vs Susquehanna Valley.
