OWEGO GIRLS' FLAG FOOTBALL: OFA FLAG TRAVELS TO BINGHAMTON FOR SOME EXTRA PRESEASON PREPARATION (2025-03-22)

Tioga County Sports Report
BINGHAMTON - The Owego girls' flag football team traveled to Binghamton on Saturday, where they scrimmaged the Patriots for some extra preseason preparation.

While there was plenty of good reps and learning experiences, there was also plenty of weather. The scrimmage started in the 50 degrees range, before transitioning to blowing rain and eventually some snow flurries by the time the girls hit the bus.

During Saturday's action, for one session the field was split between two groups. On one side of the 50-yard line, an Owego offensive unit worked against a Binghamton defense, while on the other side was the Patriots offense going head to head with OFA's defense.

The final session of the afternoon was designed to mimic a live game, with both teams exchanging possessions like they will eventually see in the regular flag football season.

When asked how he thought the day went, coach Rusty Virkler was pleased. "The environment was awesome. We are in the freezing cold and rain, but it was the first game-like situation for a lot of these girls," said Virkler.

"I thought they did a really good job. We obviously have a lot of newcomers and some things to work on. For the first live game situation, I thought we did a good job though."

The River Hawks' open the regular season next week against Susquehanna Valley on March 26th.
