OWEGO TENNIS: RIVER HAWKS BOYS' TEAM PUTTING IN THE WORK TO OVERCOME NUMBERS ODDS IN 2025 (2025-03-21)

OWEGO - The OFA boys' tennis team will be a bit short handed this year, but are more than willing to put in the work to try and overcome the odds.

While her team was on the court getting warmed up on a chilly Tuesday, I had the opportunity to speak with coach Erica Haray about the approaching spring tennis season.

"It's been good so far. We have a great strength coach we've trained with twice this week, and then we have come out to the courts and used them no matter what the conditions have been," said Haray.

The River Hawks' tennis lineup will be limited this season with only six roster members. When asked if she knew how that lineup might shakeout for the start of the season, coach Haray said that determination plays itself out in practice.

"They have to complete a round robin. All the players have to play each other to determine the lineup," commented Haray.

Coming back in 2025 is junior, Sam Beyer. Beyer was OFA's top singles player last year and could likely return to that slot again this season. Also expected to be in the mix are DJ Cardone and freshman, Tanner Hayes. Scott Reigle, a freshman and senior, Grant Kersten will be looked to as key contributors, as well as junior, Anakyn Crawford.

The low numbers will certainly make it difficult for team victories, but coach Haray believes individually there will be plenty of opportunities to win matches. Especially for Beyer, who is a constant workhorse.

"Sam is a great athlete. As you watch him, he's all over the court and never quits," Haray said.

Owego tennis starts their season on the road at Chenango Forks on March 31st.
