Spencer-Van Etten/Candor stepped back on the practice field this week to begin their 2025 baseball season. The Eagles will be reliant on a strong veteran presence, considering half the roster will be made up of seniors this spring.
While the team will be heavy on upperclassman, first year co-coaches Tyler Lloyd and Chris Teribury are happy with the overall turnout so far.
"Turnout is looking pretty good. We had 15 today and at least seven are seniors. Numbers are good and they're looking forward to it," said Teribury.
"I have rarely seen where we have our first practice and we end up having five or six more kids the next day. It's a good thing. It's a good feeling to see the kids are excited and coming out," added Lloyd.
As far as coming off of last season and key returning players for SVEC, look no further than Deveon Aman. The senior should be a force on the pitcher's mound and is very motivated coming into this season.
"Coming out on the second day of practice and to be outside this early is great. I really missed it," Aman remarked. "I'm really hoping to make the all-stars as a pitcher this year, but I am really just hoping to have a good year and have wins for the team. Get as many wins as possible," said Aman.
Other potential difference makers this season for SVEC will be Wyatt Ross, as well as Cam Sinn behind the plate.
The Eagles have players back in multiple facets of the game. "One thing that's really awesome is we have some key returners in all three aspects of it. Behind the plate, pitching and in the outfield," coach Lloyd said.
"Jason Jantz as well in the outfield. So we have leaders in all three phases," added Lloyd.
As far as strengths go, Coach Teribury believes the eagles shine running the bases as well.
"I see a lot of it on the base paths. We're going to be aggressive and open it up a bit. We have a lot of speed at the top of this lineup," said Teribury.
Spencer-Van Etten/Candor baseball appears ready to see how they stack up against everyone else. The Eagles will open on the road against Windsor next Saturday, March 29th at noon.
