HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' LACROSSE: OWEGO TAKES THE PRACTICE FIELD FOR FIRST WEEK OF 2025 SPRING CAMPAIGN (2025-03-17)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO - The Owego girls lacrosse team returned to the field in chilly conditions Monday afternoon as they reported for their first practice of the upcoming spring season.

The River Hawks look to improve upon last year's solid performance, which resulted in a final record of 9-7. The first practice of the 2025 campaign showed a strong roster turnout that head coach Ashlee Marsh was pleased with.

"We have about 39 girls between JV and varsity, so we are looking pretty good numbers wise," said coach Marsh.

When it comes to key retuning players for this season's lacrosse team, Owego will rely on a mix of senior leadership and returning underclassmen to make the next step.

"We definitely have a lot of returning key players" Marsh said. "We have our three eighth graders that started for us last year. Some powerhouse seniors in Madison McEvoy, Lexi Herceg, and Bella Silvestri. Plus standout goalie, Shannon Maslin. Then a couple more underclassmen coming back as well," added coach Marsh.

The River Hawks girls lacrosse squad spent the opening practice drilling in groups as they prepare for next week's season opener. When asked what the remainder of this first week of practices will look like, coach Marsh emphasized the need to continue to work on basic skillsets.

"The first week for us is always fundamentals. If you can't pass and catch, that makes it really hard because in a game, possession is key. It will be about figuring out how to use our skills the best way to score, while still having limited time," Marsh said.

Owego girls' lacrosse will open the season at home on March 27th against Chenango Valley. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
