IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: S-VE SUFFERS FIRST LOSS, FALLING TO NEWFIELD (2019-01-15)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWFIELD  - Cold shooting proved costly as S-VE suffered its first setback of the season, a 50-38 IAC South Small School loss to Newfield here Tuesday.

The Panthers made just 23 percent of their two-point field goal attempts (10-for-44) and went 3-for-15 from beyond the arc.

The Trojans, looking to grab a share of the division lead with S-VE, held the Panthers to a single basket in the first quarter. Three-pointers from Jacob Humble and Joshua Wood helped Newfield get off to a 13-2 lead.

Five pints from Nathan Mack and a trey by Noah Mack helped close the gap to 22-16 at the half.

Noah Mack would go 4-for-4 at the free throw line and score eight points in the third quarter, and James Sutherlin would knockdown a trey as S-VE closed to within a point, 38-37, with eight minutes to go.

However, the Trojans exploded for 22 points in the final frame as LaRon Boykin scored nine points, and Humble and Daejahd Leckey added seven and five, respectively.

Humble scored a game-high 18 points, Boykin added 15 and Leckey accounted for 12 more.

Noah Mack paced S-VE with 15 points, going 5-for-6 at the free throw line, and also had three assists, three steals and two blocks. Sutherlin had 10 points, two assists and a block; and Nathan Mack added nine points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Matthew Byrne contributed five steals.

S-VE (10-1) travels to Marathon Friday.
