IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: NEWARK VALLEY STARTS HOT, TURNS BACK WAVERLY (2019-01-15)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY - Newark Valley was hot out of the gate, but had to fight off a second-quarter surge from Waverly and play solid defense in the second half to defeat the Wolverines, 69-55, in IAC South Large School here Tuesday.

The Cardinals raced out to a 27-15 lead as Coffin scored 15 of his game-high 28 points in the first quarter, canning a trio of 3-pointers in the process.

However, Waverly came charging back in the second period as six different players scored to double up NV, 22-11, and cut the lead to 38-37 at the break.

"We allowed them to make a big run in the second quarter by making mental mistakes and not rebounding the basketball. And out offense got stale. It seemed like all three of those things happened at once."

Dylan Ward led the way with 10 points in the period, giving him 18 of his team-high 23 points by halftime.

"At halftime we talked about making sure we did a better job keeping Dylan Ward under control and for the most part I think we were successful at that."

The Cardinals would make the necessary adjustments at the half and hold Ward to a 3-pointer in the third quarter and two free throws in the fourth.

"Our third quarter attack included lots of pressure and energy, which is what we were lacking heading into halftime. When you allow a team to make such a big run on you before the half and cut into your early lead, it's hard to know where the team morale is going to be. But our leaders at halftime made sure we came out with positive energy. And we did."

Likewise, the Wolverines slowed Coffin down some after the break as well. He managed one trey in each quarter, along with a pair of free throws in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Donavin Beebe stepped up his game, scoring seven of his 12 points in the third period as NV increased its advantage to 56-49.

"Donavan came out strong gin the third quarter after a sluggish start. When he plays well for us, we play well in general, so it's important that we can get him going offensively."

The Cardinals defense would allow just six points from Waverly in the final stanza.

Andrew Obregon contributed 10 points to the win, Riley Malone chipped in with eight, Micah Williams had six and Ethan Bigelow had four.

Ward would finish with a double-double, adding 12 rebounds to his 23 points. Caden Hollywood scored eight points, Ryan Lambert had seven points and Jalen McCarty had seven points.

Newark Valley (5-9) hosts Trumansburg Friday while Waverly (5-7) visits Whitney Point.
