PHOENIX, N.Y. - Owego's Matt Laubach captured the 99-pound championship at the Phoenix Mid-Winter Scramble here Saturday, leading the Indians to a fifth-place showing in the 12-team round-robin tournament.

Laubach pinned Chase Nevills of Copenhagen in 2:51 to secure the title. He would go 4-0 on the day, adding three more falls. He pinned Chase Nevills of Copenhagen in 2:27, Canton's Nick Tupper in 1:16 and Dan Livesay of Cicero-North Syracuse in 59 seconds

The Indians had two other championship finalists, Kaden Russell at 145 and James Bundy at 195. Both placed second.

Russell dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Peyton Rupracht of Central Square. He opened the day with a 10-0 major decision against Liverpool's Dan Ianno, then took a medical forfeit over Devin Southworth of C-NS, and added falls over Canton's Keenan LeBouef in 3:57 and teammate Zach Miner in 3:34.

Bundy lost by fall to Mykle Thomas of Syracuse in one minute. He started the day with a 4-0 win over Adam Rush of C-NS, lost to Thomas by fall in two minutes, scored a 16-8 major decision over Sam Guthrie of Phoenix and decisioned Hamier Williams-Borges, 4-1.

Tyler Benjamin placed third at 195, decking Willams-Borges of Liverpool in 4:55 to avenge a loss earlier in the tourney. His day started with a fall in 3:11 over General Brown's Tyler Scordo and followed that up with a pin of Janesville-Dewitt / Christian Brothers Academy's Hythm Abdel-Aziz in 1:02. He lost by fall to Williams-Borges in 1:25 and to Thomas in 1:38.

Taking fourth were Jacob Morris at 120, Avery Middendorf at 126 and Mike Bridge at 220.

Morris lost by fall to Bryar Croniser of Adirondack in 3:31. He opened the event with a pair of falls, decking Dante Coppola of Central Square in 2:54 and downing Ben Williams of Syracuse in 1:59. He also lost by pin in 4:20 to General Brown's Blake LaValley.

Middendorf dropped a 10-1 major decision to Justyn Begley from Carthage. He began the tourney with a pin of JD / CBA's Kaylob Deya in 1:59, then decisioned Central Square's Brandon Luedemann, 7-4, before dropping a 7-0 decision to Adirondack's Hunter Carr.

Bridge had to medical forfeit his match to JD / CBA's Laith Abdel-Aziz. In his first match, he posted a 10-1 major decision over Cole Lapin of Phoenix, then blanked Duncan Zubrzycki of Copenhagen, 5-0. After falling by pin to Luke Smith of Carthage in 49 seconds, he injury defaulted to Toryan Jones of JD / CBA.

Sean Heffernan was fifth at 170, pinning Connor Vecchio of General Brown in 2:36. He lost by pin to Canton's Gaven Thorton in 41 seconds, then bounced back with falls in 1:21 over Liverpool's Steven Andrews and in 28 seconds against JD / CBA's Jamison MacLachlan.

Zach Miner took sixth at 145, getting edged, 3-2, by JD / CBA's Enver Bulatov. He defeated LeBouef, 7-3, lost by pin to Ianno in 4:56, won over Southworth by injury default and lost to Russell.

Mason Pratt was sixth also, falling to James Richer of JD / CBA, 9-7, in overtime at 182. His other matches were a loss by pin to Alex VanAntwerp of Central Square in 5:31, a loss by pin to Julian Savaglia of C-NS in 18 seconds, a victory by pin over Adirondack's Kyle Altrock in 20 seconds, and a win by fall against Adirondack's Zach Kraszewski in 3:44.

Logan Bailey placed ninth at 285, winning his final bout of the day by fall in 3:00 over Nathaniel Garrett of Phoenix. He suffered losses by 6-2 decision to Damien Zawatski of Green Bay and by pin in 1:16 to Syracuse's Carveion Wright, but bounced back to pin Patrick Baylor of Central Square in 2:23.

General Brown ran away with the team title, scoring 234 points. JD / CBA was second with 182.5, followed by Cicero-North Syracuse (159), Liverpool (157) and Owego (149).

The Indians were without standouts Andrew Laubach and Cam Bundy, who were competing in the Eastern States Classic.

Owego returns to action Tuesday in the Section IV Division II Dual Meet Championship at Walton. The Indians are seeded sixth and face No. 3 Norwich, the defending champion, at 5 p.m.
