LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. — Newark Valley’s Trentyn Rupert has drawn the third seed and Owego’s Cam Bundy is seeded No. 10 for the 17th annual Eastern States Classic.
Rupert (21-0) is seeded behind University of Pennsylvania commit Joey Slackman (29-0) of Commack and Norwich’s Tyler Rice (22-2).
Ironically, Rupert is ranked No. 1 in Section IV Division II by cnywrestling.com and No. 1 in the state in Division II by New York Wrestling News. Rice is No. 2 in the section and No. 4 in the state. Rupert also has a win over a common opponent. Last weekend at the Saratoga Invitational, Rupert defeated Ballston Spa’s Jacob Stangle, 3-0, in the championship bout. Rice lost to Stangle, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Slackman is the state’s top-ranked Division I heavyweight by NYWN.
Bundy is 15-3 and recently dropped from 170 to 160, where he will be competing at this weekend. The top seed is Kyle Mosher (23-1) from South East, ranked second in Division I by NYWN. Pearl River’s Jack Chesman (27-0), the top-ranked wrestler in Division II, is the second seed and Cory Day (29-1) of Iroquois, ranked No. 2 in D2, is the third seed.
Other Division II wrestlers seeded high in the bracket are Dolgeville’s Jacob Null (24-0), ranked fourth and seeded sixth, and Duanesburg’s Charlie Grygas, ranked fifth and seeded seventh.
The tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at Sullivan Community College. Eastern States attracts many of the top wrestlers from New York and other states and has been said to be more difficult to win than the NYSPHSAA state championships.
