IAC / STAC WRESTLING: NV, OWEGO COMPETE AT ELINSKY TOURNEY (13 PHOTOS) (2019-01-05)
Tioga County Sports ReportDEPOSIT - Newark Valley's Noah Shiel and Cameron Carrier, and Owego's Sean Heffernan locked up third-place finishes at the Stan Elinsky Tournament here Saturday.
Carrier posted a 4-1 record at 160 pounds and Heffernan went 4-1 at 182. Shiel was 3-2 at 152.
Carrier decisioned Sidney's Dan Calkins, 8-1, for third. He also posted first- and third-period pins and scored a technical fall before losing to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill's Travis Decker, who would place second.
Heffernan pinned M-E's Jimmy Mancini in 43 seconds in the third-place bout. He also scored first-period falls in his first, second and fourth bouts. He would drop his third match of the day by pin to eventual champion Noah Forbes from Northeast Bradford.
Shiel competed in a round-robin format and won his first three matches with first-period falls before falling to eventual runner-up Reed Scott of Sidney and Shaker's Tyler Stanton, the eventual champion.
Owego would place eighth in the 13-team without any of its varsity regulars competing.
Also placing for the Indians were Kaden Russell, fourth at 145; Logan Bailey, fourth at 285; Mason Pratt, fifth at 182; Aiden Wurthner, sixth at 152; and Tyler Garcia, sixth at 182.
Newark Valley left several regulars home as well, and took ninth place.
The Cardinals' other place-winners were Joe Woodmansee, fourth at 195; Mark Vosburgh, sixth at 126; Connor Jacobson, sixth at 160; and Noah Waterman, 10th at 126.
Shaker out of the Albany area dominated the tourney, winning the team championship with 237.5 points. Section IV rivals Oxford / Green (137.5 points) and Sidney (131) placed second and third, respectively. Owego scored 58 and NV had 37.5.
Both teams return to dual meet action next week against Whitney Point. Newark Valley hosts the Golden Eagles for an IAC Division I clash Wednesday and Owego visits the Point Thursday for a non-league match.
