IAC BASEBALL: SVEC DROPS 4-2 BATTLE TO EDISON (2024-04-19)

Tioga County Sports Report
ELMIRA HEIGHTS — The Spencer-Van Etten / Candor baseball team put up a valiant fight, but came out on the short end of a 4-2 decision against Edison Friday.

The Eagles wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Logan Aman led off the game with a base on balls, Jacek Teribury singled and Cameron Sinn sacrificed Aman home.

“We started out strong with Jacek Teribury laying down an exceptional bunt that moved Logan Aman to third,” SVEC coach Cliff Pierce said. “Two pitches later Cameron Sinn laid out a bunt and was able to squeeze Logan Aman in.

“Overall, we played a very good game. Cameron Sinn was really strong at shortstop and Cyrus Toyrlya made a couple of nice plays at second. Devon Aman threw a strong game.

“The only negative was that TAE was able to score two runs on passed balls and one on a fielder’s choice. Coach (Rick) Neild and I were pleased with the progress we made tonight.”

Wyatt Ross was hit by a pitch to start the second, but the Spartans’ Drew Slaven retired the next three batters. Sinn singled in the next inning but was stranded at third base.

SVEC would plate another run in the fourth as Jason Jantz started off with a walk, stole second and third, and scored on Ross’s sacrifice fly to center field.

The Eagles threatened again in the sixth after Deveon Aman hit a one-out single, but Slaven struck out the next two batters.

Nico Cheplick singled and scored in the home half of the first.

Riley Cobb was hit by a pitch and Zach Piper doubled in the second, and both players scored on passed balls to make it a 3-1 game.

Edison tacked on an insurance run in the sixth after Cobb drew a leadoff walk and scored.

Deveon Aman struck out nine batters, and surrendered four hits and four walks. Slaven fanned seven, and allowed three hits and two walks. Both pitchers hit one batter.

SVEC (1-5) visits Whitney Point (0-4) on Monday.
