TIOGA COUNTY FOOTBALL ALL-STARS: TIOGA'S JOHN WORTHING HEADLINES TALENTED GROUP (2018-12-30)

Tioga County Sports Report
TIOGA COUNTY  - Tioga County teams produced some pretty good football this past fall. Four of the county's five teams qualified for postseason play with one advancing all the way to the state semifinals.

Owego (9-3) finished third in Section IV Division II behind perennial state powerhouses Chenango Forks and Maine-Endwell, Waverly (7-3) was the sectional runner-up to eventual Class C state champion Susquehanna Valley and Tioga (9-3) advanced to the Class D state semis for the seventh time in the past eight years. Newark Valley (5-4) and SVEC (3-6), both of which dealt with key injuries, managed to remain competitive the majority of the season.
The Tigers produced a multi-talented standout in every aspect of the game. That effort earned Tioga's John Worthing the 2018 Tioga County Sports Report Player of the Year.

As a running back, Worthing rushed for 1,050 yards and 13 touchdowns. He led the Tigers with 17 receptions for 232 yards and three TDs.

He also played defensive back and led the team in interceptions and was among the leaders in tackles. Worthing also returned punts and handled the long-snapping chores.

Offensive Player of the Year
Owego quarterback led Tyler Phelps threw for a school record 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns and was intercepted five times. He also set the school record for completions as the Indians went 6-3.

Defensive Player of the Year
Gio Fabi was also a key performer in Owego's 6-3 campaign. At 6-foot-2, 265 pounds, the junior nose guard was an imposing presence to opposing offensive linemen and teams had to figure out how to get around him opposed to going through him.

Newcomer of the Year
Emmett Wood was only a freshman, but performed like a seasoned veteran, averaging 8.1 yards per carry while rushing for 1,416 yards and 15 TDs. He was also one of the team leaders in tackles and interceptions.
