TIOGA COUNTY FIELD HOCKEY ALL-STARS: NV GOALIE WALES LEADS THE WAY (2018-12-25)
Tioga County Sports ReportTIOGA COUNTY - The Tioga County field hockey teams were often competitive throughout the Section IV season and, most of the time, had some very competitive battles against one another. In several cases, the victor would emerge the result of some strong defensive play, including several solid performances from the goalies.
All four teams can credit much of their successes to the girls guarding the cage and one of the best stoppers has been named the 2018 Tioga County Sports Report Field Hockey Player of the Year, Newark Valley's Alison Wales.
The junior goalie ranked second in the state with 195 saves and was tied for seventh in goals against average with 1.1 allowed per game. She allowed just 26 goals in 15 games, with an .882 save percentage as NV went 7-8 overall. Wales also posted five shutouts while playing behind a young defense.
A leader on the field, Wales was named the Cardinals' MVP and was also selected a Section IV Division III First Team all-star.
Newcomer of the YearSVEC freshman Isabella Young didn't bring much goalkeeping experience to the Eagles' lineup, but quickly learned what it would take to defend her cage. She would record an .814 save percentage and played a key role in a 5-game win streak which would help SVEC qualify for the Section IV playoffs. One of her biggest victories of the season would be a 3-0 shutout against Division III champion Moravia, which went 10-1 against Section IV opponents during the regular season.
