2018-19 GIRLS BASKETBALL PREVIEW: NV HOPES TO BE CONTENDER (2018-12-10)

Tioga County Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY - With one senior on this year's team, Newark Valley appears to be a solid contender in the IAC Large School and Section IV Class C ranks. Whether the Cardinals are ready to hold their own with the top-level teams in the league and section is yet to be seen, but early indications show NV is not a team to be taken lightly.

The Cardinals dominated two of their first three opponents, dropping a 49-46 heartbreaker to perennial IAC power Waverly in between.

"Last season, we fell short of our goal of qualifying for sectionals with a record of 6-14," said head coach Greg Schweiger. "This season, we look to improve on that record, be more competitive in a very tough IAC South division, and qualify for sectionals.

"Our lone senior is Tressa Nechwedowich, who is still on the road to full recovery after having her junior season derailed by two knee injuries," Schweiger said. "We are a young varsity team with only one returning starter in sophomore Mackenna Nechwedowich.

Mackenna Nechwedowich was a second team IAC all-star as a freshman, averaging nearly a double-double. Fellow sophomore Brianna Beebe brings varsity experience and will contribute on both the offensive and defensive ends.

Schweiger added that other players looking to have an impact on the team are returning juniors Kendra Morris, Elizabeth Ferguson, Sara Mertson and Marissa Berghor, all with some varsity experience.

Coming up from last year's undefeated JV squad are junior Chelsie Fuller, sophomore Allie Wandell and freshmen Hannah Ferguson and Grace Gardner.

NV graduated two players, Farrah Fiacco, now playing at Elmira College, and Paityn Smith.
