NEW YORK STATE VOLLEYBALL: OWEGO TRIO NAMED ALL-STATE (2018-12-04)

Tioga County Sports Report
OWEGO - Section IV Class B champion and state runner-up Owego has landed three players - Grace Thomas, Kaylee Kelly and Ruby Coleman - on New York Volleyball Coaches Association all-state volleyball teams.

Thomas, a senior setter, is a repeat selection on the first team. She dished out 672 assists this season and was named to the to all-tournament team at the state tournament. She was also named to the STAC all-star team.

"She is our obvious assist leader and our biggest court leader," said Owego head coach Brittney Race. "She is our quarterback and we would not have been close in any game without her talent and leadership abilities."

Senior outside hitter Kaylee Kelly joins Thomas on the first team. Also an All-STAC pick, she had 231 kills on the season and 164 digs.

"She was an offensive leader for us as well as a defensive player," Race said. "She isn't a showy player at all but she was definitely a player we couldn't live without. Kaylee was a go to player in almost any situation. She was dominate in our state tournament and came up huge for us in lots of different situations."

Coleman, a senior middle hitter and All-STAC selection posted 128 kills and 38 blocks.

"Ruby wasn't a showy player but a player who made things happen in tight situations," said Race. "At the end of the season, we asked her to increase the pace of her attack and she did that with no problem. Her play allowed us to open up our outsides more and give us more opportunity to score points. Ruby's blocking also came up big for us in lots of our big matches."
